Earlier in the year the lovely Sandra from NE1's Newcastle Fashion Week put me in touch with the equally lovely Alison Caiola. Alison had recently published her first novel and offered me the opportunity to read and review a copy and I'm so glad I said yes to this opportunity!
Without giving away the story too much - The Seeds of a Daisy is about Lily Lockwood, a rising Hollywood star who appears to have it all but when her mother Daisy has a devastating car accident and ends up in coma, Lily re-evaluates everything she has ever known.
I have to admit that at first I found the American-English hard to get my head around but within a couple chapters I was hooked. Then my Dad had his stroke and suddenly I found myself sitting in a hospital in frighteningly similar circumstances to Lily in the book.
Time goes a lot more slowly in a hospital, minutes seem like hours and reading was a great distraction and a huge comfort in the first few days while we waited for answers from doctors. I couldn't put the book down from then on and finished it early this week.
The book is clearly well researched on the hospital front and provides a fascinating insight into behind the scenes Hollywood. Given the fact Alison has spent many years in Hollywood as a writer and PR executive this doesn't come as a shock. If you're looking for a new read that will get you thinking then I highly recommend The Seeds of a Daisy. You can purchase it on Amazon here & follow Alison on twitter.
